Medical Coding Course Objectives:

1. Identify the purpose of the CPT® & ICD-9-CM manuals.

2. Identify the information in appendices of the CPT® manual.

3. Explain the levels of E/M services.

4. Code a wide variety of patient services using CPT® codes.

5. Understand the official ICD-9-CM coding principles.

6. Assign ICD-9-CM codes to the highest level of specificity.

Part Two- ICD-9-CM

Lesson 1 - ICD-9-CM Part I
Diagnostic coding through medical necessity, coding guidelines, and how-to steps are presented along with coding conventions, coding tips, and understanding ICD-9-CM Volumes 1 and 2.

Lesson 2 - ICD-9-CM Part II

Review of the Official Coding Guidelines and application.

Part Three-CPT

Lesson 1 - Introduction to CPT® and HCPCS.

Lesson 2- Evaluation and Management
From the basics of E/M coding, the students advance to actual reporting of these codes based on provider information. A step-by-step approach to E/M auditing is presented with the various types of audits common to medical practices.

Lesson 3 - Modifiers
The AMA's coding modifiers and coding guidelines are defined. Application of proper use of AMA modifiers will be examined.

Lesson 4- Integumentary System
Descriptions of each section of surgery codes are in-depth and begin with the integumentary system

Lesson  5- Musculoskeletal System
One of the largest sets of codes in the CPT® is the musculoskeletal system. The application, relevant definitions, anatomical descriptions, and an overview of the various procedures are demonstrated.

Lesson  6- Respiratory System
Students are introduced to respiratory diseases with subsequent treatment and the functions of the system's organs. The respiratory system codes with the application and proper documentation are defined.

Lesson 7- Cardiovascular
Cardiothoracic surgery of the heart, coronary arteries and great vessels are discussed in this chapter, in addition to pacemaker and cardioverter-defibrillator placement, surgery, therapeutic and diagnostic vascular procedures.

Lesson 8 - Digestive System, Hemic and Lymphatic Systems, Mediastinum and Diaphragm
This chapter covers the digestive process, diagnostic tests and procedures and endoscopies pertaining to the digestive system, Hemi and Lymphatic systems and Mediastinum and Diaphragm.

Lesson  9- Urinary System, Reproductive Systems, Delivery, and Maternity
The urinary system range of the CPT® manual includes codes specific to males and females and explores the general concepts and anatomy of the urinary system as well as the anatomy and consequent services and procedures specific to each gender.

Lesson 10- Endocrine and Nervous System
This chapter covers coding procedures and techniques of the skull, meninges and the brain, spine and spinal cord, extracranial nerves, peripheral nerves, and the autonomic nervous system.

Lesson  11- Eye, Ocular Adnexa, and Ear
This chapter covers procedures and coding pertaining to the eye and auditory system are discussed.

Lesson  12- Anesthesia and Radiology

Lesson 13- Pathology and Laboratory
This chapter covers procedure and coding issues pertaining to pathology and laboratory

Lesson 14- Medicine
This chapter discusses immunization and administration for vaccines/toxoids, therapeutic and diagnostic infusions, psychiatry, dialysis, gastroenterology, ophthalmology codes, cardiovascular codes, physical medicine, and other special services that are found in the Medicine section of the CPT®-4 text.

Lesson  15- Final Exam and Review

Final Exam reviewed and an overall review prior to Certification Exam

Course Completion Time:

Students have full access to Online Medical Coding Class for one full year. This course is self-paced and completion time is dependent upon on many factors, including the student's prior knowledge, connection speed, reading comprehension and exercises completed.
